Post wanted as "house sitter"or"room sitter"

I, and a large number of other Cambridge computer scientists, received this remarkable spam e-mail on 27 August 2007 from someone who may indeed be William Hutton. As this highly public e-mail has generated a lot of interest, I created a web page for it. Is it a 419 scam, is it real, or is it both? The offer itself is intriguing: in return for five minute chores and a rug on the floor, he will offer stock tips and keep your keyboard warm. Scam or otherwise, it makes an enjoyable read.

20070828: outblaze.com, the ISP that carried this spam, is reported to have taken action against the user as a result of violation of their acceptable use policy.

Subject: Post wanted as"house sitter"or"room sitter"

Dear Male Cambridge Computer Scientist,(with apologies to
      the ladies!!)

I am in a position which means that I both have something to
give which you may want-and need something which you may be
able to supply.Let me explain.

During the next academic year-mid September 2007 to mid-2008-I
want to spend my weekdays in Cambridge as cheaply as possible
and with as much free access to the Internet as
possible.Ideally,I want to spend the period between 8am and 9pm
every day in front of a screen-though a high percentage of that
period(say,8 hours per weekday rather than the full 13)would
suffice. The reason I want to do that is because I trade the
financial markets-largely FTSE and the Dow Jones Index-over the
Internet and I am trying to rebuild my finances after a
disaster some years ago when I was less financially wise than
now.

During the weekends-early Saturday morning to late Sunday
evening-I would always be away visiting my girl-friend,who is
much younger than I am and with whom I have been going out for
three years. She lives to the west of Oxford so an early Oxford
coach every Saturday morning, returning late Sunday evening
would be a regular part of my weekly life. After this year, which
she is spending completing various projects,we intend to both
live together in Wales-the style of that life largely depending
on how much money I make-or don't make!!(nothing can be
guaranteed)-this year and also her career success.

So,basically,I need regular weekday access to the Internet and
somewhere to sleep for five or six nights a week-I don't mind
sleeping on a floor!!-both as cheaply as possible.I don't need
to be fed though the facility to easily make tea and coffee to
keep me awake is very necessary!!

So that's what I want-what can I give in return??

Simply that,as a room or house sitter whilst you are out,I can
do your washing up,hoover the floor,do various other little
household chores whilst you are out-though,obviously,nothing
which would divert my attention from the screen for more than
about 5 minutes!!-BUT above all I can free you from any risk of
having your property stolen or"borrowed"while you are out and I
am there. That is the most important but simple service which I
can provide.

I have,in fact, been living on this basis for the last three
years with a graduate of Pembroke College,Cambridge, who then
did a doctorate here and now works for the Crystallographic
Data Centre here in Cambridge-sadly,he cannot have me next year
because he is getting married at Cherry Hinton Baptist Church
on 29th September and I have to leave his house by 7th
September. It's good to be able to rejoice about a notice to
quit because it's happened as a result of a dear friend's joy
and happiness!!But,of course,it means I need to find someone
else to partly live with for a year with whom I can have a
similar relationship.

Of course my friend will be able to vouch for my honesty and
trustworthiness.Both of us-and my girl-friend-are Christians
though I do not try to sell my own theological views to others
any more than I would try to insist that you or anyone else
talked to me about their emotional/sex life. These areas are
private!!

Why I have I written to you??Essentially because you are a
male computer scientist.Obviously I would not wish to share the
room or house of a lady-other than the one I love(who, this
year,is still with her family!!)-and,because you are a computer
scientist, you will both own a computer which I can use when you
are not using it yourself(having your own machine if your
existence is semi-nomadic is NOT a good idea!!)and, very
important,you can repair/fix quickly.

There is,of course, one other thing I can and will offer
you-though there can be NO guarantees!!That is simply that,if
this year I am hugely successful in the financial markets and
you are the person who,by giving me what I ask for here, have
helped make this possible,I WILL share the knowledge which I
have gained this academic year with you. That means
that, although I will not be sharing the profits which I make
this academic year,I will share with you the knowledge which
would possibly enable you to do the same in future
years. But,given that I am totally honest about these
matters, let me emphasise three things-(1)I cannot guarantee
that this academic year I will make money-I made far too little
in the three years with my friend from Pembroke,(2)I will not
be sharing the profits I make-assuming I make any!!-with
whoever I am with this year,(3)even if I make profits in
2007-08 AND share the knowledge of how I did it with the person
with whom I live(which I promise I will do!!),there can be no
guarantee that this will enable him to make similar profits in
subsequent years. Why not??-simply because my trading strategies
may have worked in 2007-08 NOT because I have made a great
discovery but simply due to luck.

I hope that in this email I have given you a proposition which
interests you-if so email me back and we can meet and talk. But
I have also been totally honest and,as you can see from the
paragraph above, there is no guaranteed return or guaranteed
success here and I make no false promises about anything at
all.

I hope you will think that I am worth contacting-if you contact
me I will email you again to arrange a meeting if you would
like to talk further. If you are not interested in my
proposition, simply don't reply and I promise absolutely not to
contact you again. The last thing I want to do is annoy or
antagonise anybody!!

Thank you for being kind enough to read this e-mail.

With all best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

WILLIAM HUTTON.
